Questions parents ask
An advocate helps you understand your child's rights, prepares you for meetings, reviews records and evaluations, and often attends IEP or 504 meetings with you. The goal is to make sure your child gets appropriate services and that your voice is heard in the process.
What does a special education advocate do?
No. I'm a special education advocate, not a lawyer, and I don't provide legal advice or represent families in due process hearings or court. Most concerns are resolved long before it comes to that — but if yours calls for legal help, I'll refer you to a qualified attorney.
Are you an attorney?
There's no state license for special education advocates. My credential is the Board Certification for Advocacy in Special Education (BCASE), awarded by NASET and AASEP after a comprehensive program in special education law, IEPs, and dispute resolution. It reflects rigorous training and a commitment to doing this work well — it isn't a government license.
What does 'certified' mean for an advocate?
An IEP (under the IDEA) provides specialized educational services and tailored instruction for students whose disabilities impact their learning. Alternatively, a 504 plan ensures equal access through accommodations for those with physical or mental impairments. Determining which pathway best supports your child’s unique needs is a process I can guide you through with complete clarity.
